Manufacturer Description:

Carver Yachts’ 25 foot Allegra is a boat that does double duty. Clearly a sportboat, it is also a sportcruiser. Whatever role it assumes at any given moment will depend on its skipper’s needs and whims. As a family runabout, the little Carver is an almost perfect size. Small enough to turn and bank with agility, the 25 is capable of thrilling dashes approaching 50 mph. It planes quickly, in about 3.5 seconds, all of which should make it very versatile: an ideal water-skiing boat, racy runabout, daycruiser and occasional overnighter. Added traction was provided by twin sets of counter-rotating propellers, giving the relatively heavy boat, 5,986 lbs. dry, as tested, a surprisingly light-footed zip.

This is definitely a new generation hull. Underway, the engines were extremely quiet due to Carver’s engine room soundproofing. A brisk sprint in the 25 Allegra proves the noise dampening is excellent. Conversations of normal volume can be carried on at 30 mph on the helm deck. Carver packed the maximum of practical features into a minimum of space aboard this boat. Despite the model name of 2587, the Allegra’s overall length is actually 28 feet. This includes the swim platform, which is molded into the stern. Although the platform doesn’t have a bottom extension, it does provide an area for swimming and diving. Immediately forward of the transom is a bench seat, well padded and stylish in its teal and white motif. At the touch of a switch, the entire stern seat assembly hinges upward for convenient engine service. The two small V-8s fill the compartment, but the vital service components, such as fuel and oil filters and distributor, are easily reachable.

Forward of the cockpit, the helm sports a pair of plush padded seats with high, sturdy side bolsters. The helm seat is wide enough for two. The companion seat is a single. Both seats are console mounted with stowage areas beneath, and will keep you safely glued in place as the Allegra whips an afternoon chop into shape. The helm seat faces a futuristic instrument panel, a wide, curve-cowled design, which is both sun reflective and centrally positioned to place the engines’ vital signs at eye-level for easy monitoring. This works well.

Belowdeck is a super-compact little cabin with just about every comfort the big cruising yachts offer, only in miniature. Headroom, for example, is five feet, seven inches. Down the companionway steps is a small galley immediately to port. It offers a one burner stove, a tiny sink with pressure water, and a small electric refrigerator, top loading to save space. To starboard, the compact head features another small sink, marine head and shower. The compartment is molded fiberglass and should be easy to keep clean. In the forepeak is a curved lounge with a circular dinette table that can be lowered to convert the area into a large and very comfortable V-berth. A surprisingly large and useful hanging locker fronts the head compartment. The entire space is ultra-compact but still avoids a hemmed in feeling, through Carver’s judicious use of light colors and pleasant design. The 2587 Allegra should be just dandy for summer nights. A large hatch forward and side port provide for sunshine and fresh air. The helm offers sufficient spray protection to venture well beyond the breakwater, however, a set of canvas will close it off nicely.
